Google Home continuous conversation Connected Things

Continuous Conversation lets you make multiple commands one after the other. You can choose to enable this feature on some or all of your devices via the Google Home app. Say “Hey Google” and ask your question or give a command. You’ll know your Assistant listens if the lights on top of the device spin or pulse (Google Nest Mini , Google Home Mini , Google Home Max, Google Nest Audio, Google Nest Hub, and Google Nest Hub Max). After your Assistant responds, it listens for about 8 seconds for your follow-up questions.

I’ll admit, it is impressive and adds a ton to the overall conversational feel Google is really starting to pin down with the Assistant. If you’re done with your conversation with your Assistant, you can stop to talk or start to talk to someone else. Your Assistant will know your conversation is over and the microphone will close. I wish this was a bit simpler, but it took me a second to figure it out. Google says you need to go to your Assistant settings, but that isn’t the most straightforward task. I launched the Assistant on my Pixelbook and wasn’t sure where to go, so I clicked the little blue icon up in the right corner. It is there on your phone, too, so you can find it as soon as you bring up your Assistant. Trying to throw it a bit of a curveball, I threw in a “What about in Cincinnati? ” and not only did Google know I was still talking weather, it knew that I had just asked about the weekend weather and gave me the forecast for this weekend in Cincinnati (we’re going to see the Cubs Saturday!).

How to have a conversation with Google Assistant

For starters, Continued Conversation is an opt-in feature that isn't automatically enabled. More importantly, that means if it doesn't work how you hoped it would, you can choose to disable it and revert the old way of saying the wake phase every time you want to talk to your smart speaker. The feature, which is available on all Google Assistant and Nest Home smart speakers allows you to follow-up questions without repeating a "Hey Google". With both continued conversation and multiple commands, Google Home could now have an edge in natural conversation on Alexa -- if you actually want the mic to stay hot. You have several seconds to follow up with an additional query before the lights turn off completely, indicating that Google thinks you’re done for now. To start another round of question-asking and command-giving, utter the wake phrase and cycle through your queries.

Slide this on, and note the Availability for your speakers below. This feature is only available on dedicated Home speakers at launch, so third-party units may not support it.

The feature was introduced at theGoogle I/ODeveloper Conference on May 8th, and it's officially rolling out to customers starting Thursday. The optional feature, called Continuous Conversation, means that you no longer need to say "OK Google" or "Hey Google" prior to every command. After it answers, it will continue to listen for up to eight seconds for any follow-up commands.

They only record and respond after they hear the correct phrase. With continued conversation, Google Assistant will supposedly be smart enough to only respond if you continue to talk to it, as opposed to someone else in the room. Still, the feature could easily lead to Google Home recording snippets of conversation when you forget the mic is on.

To be more conversational, but one of the least conversational aspects of talking to it is a necessary evil. You need to say either "Hey, Google," or "OK, Google" every time you want to give a command to your Google Home smart speaker. You primarily interact with the Home through voice commands, and until now, you had to say those wake words even to ask multiple questions in a row. Simply put, this is Google allowing your devices that use the Assistant to continue listening to you for a few seconds after a question so you can issue a follow-up if needed. For instance, before this update, if I wanted to check the weather today, tomorrow, and for the weekend, I’d have to issue the “OK Google” command three times. Google's new continued conversation feature will keep the Home's microphone enabled for up to 8 seconds after your question, so you can ask more questions without repeating those wake words.

You won't have to say "Hey Google" every time---just keep talking after it's done giving your answer. Answering two questions at once is actually a separate feature called multiple actions. Once enabled, after you say "OK, Google" or "Hey, Google," you will be able to continue talking to Google Home without repeating the wake phrase over and over. At the bottom of the Preferences page, click the “Continued Conversation” option, and then on the Continued Conversation page, slide the toggle to the on position. You’ll note that below the toggle it shows which of your devices support Continued Conversation—it’s only available on dedicated Home speakers right now.
